Published Mon 08 Sep 2025

The Leisure Institute of Western Australia (Aquatics) is proud to announce Cyrus Milne of WaterPonyz Swim School as the winner of the Emerging Leader of the Year Award at the 2025 WA Aquatic Recreation Industry Awards.

This award, sponsored by Team Buffalo, recognises outstanding individuals aged 18–30 who demonstrate passion, commitment, and the potential to become future leaders of the aquatic recreation industry.

Leading by Example

Cyrus Milne has established himself as a dynamic leader whose influence extends far beyond the lane ropes. His journey reflects a steady progression of leadership—rising from swim instructor to supervisor and coordinator roles, and now serving as Staff Trainer across six WaterPonyz centres, supporting more than 80 instructors.

Whether leading large-scale professional development sessions or providing one-on-one mentoring, Cyrus brings clarity, empathy, and a collaborative approach to every setting. His innovative weekly teaching focus areas and commitment to feedback-driven improvement have built strong, motivated, and high-performing teams.

A Commitment to Inclusion

Cyrus is equally passionate about ensuring swim teaching is accessible to all. He has undertaken professional development in disability and Autism-specific practices, learned Auslan to support non-verbal and multilingual students, and continues to adapt teaching strategies to meet the diverse needs of the community. His focus on inclusion has strengthened not only lesson delivery but also the confidence and engagement of students from all backgrounds.

Building the Industry’s Future

Beyond his day-to-day role, Cyrus is an active contributor to the broader aquatic sector. He presents at conferences, connects with industry leaders, and shares knowledge across programs to help lift teaching standards statewide. His personal philosophy—“If I am where I am now, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants”—speaks to his gratitude for those who have guided him and his commitment to raising others in turn.

Recognised for Heart and Hustle

Colleagues describe Cyrus as a leader who “brings energy, professionalism, and passion that is impossible to ignore.” He inspires both students and instructors with his enthusiasm, humour, and thoughtful approach. His leadership style—adaptable, empathetic, and inclusive—has left a lasting mark on every program he has touched.

The Emerging Leader of the Year Award celebrates not only the achievements of today but also the promise of tomorrow. In Cyrus, our industry sees a leader who embodies resilience, innovation, and a deep care for people—qualities that will shape the future of aquatic recreation in Western Australia.

LIWA Aquatics congratulates Cyrus Milne on this well-deserved recognition.
