De-escalating Conflict and Aggression Workshop: Lifeguards
Practical skills to help prevent violence and defuse volatile situations in aquatic and recreation centres.
Date: Thursday 3 December, 9.00 am –1.00 pm Location: RLSWA Training Rooms, Mount Claremont Facilitator: Dr Christian Mauri Cost: LIWA members $100 + GST | Non-members $150 + GST
Conflict is a natural part of working with the public, and at some stage every lifeguard will face a distressed or confrontational customer. How we respond in those moments can determine whether a situation is calmly resolved or escalates into something more serious.
To help build these essential skills, LIWA has engaged Dr Christian Mauri — to deliver a practical half-day workshop specificallyfor lifeguards (and aquatic technical operators). The session will equip participants with effective strategies to confidently and safely manage threatening, aggressive, or inappropriate behaviour.
Topics include:
Causes and triggers of aggression
Preventing violence before it starts
Responding to emergencies
Stages of escalation
Self-awareness and calming strategies
The role of body language
Practical defusing skills
The workshop includes current learning materials, a take-home resource package, morning tea, a certificate of attendance and 0.5 PD points. Dietary requirements can be catered for.
