AFAC Opens Doors on Health & Fitness Refurbishment
What a great way to kick off LIWA’s new Health and Fitness Technical Tour series, with our first visit taking us to Armadale Fitness & Aquatic Centre (AFAC). On Thursday 22 October, Shai Zerbes, Shelley Hall and Matt Web welcomed industry colleagues and gave us a look behind the scenes at the planning and delivery of AFAC’s health & fitness refurbishment. They shared what went well, the challenges they faced and what they’ve learned along the way.
The refresh included a new Technogym range, with cardio, strength and functional training equipment, as well as Technogym Biostrength. This technology adjusts resistance, repetitions and sets to give members a more personalised workout. AFAC is the only site in WA using Biostrength as a stand-alone set-up. The team also showed us how they reshaped the gym floor: the former Omnia Studio is now the Active Studio, creating more room for functional training, while small group training has moved into the Main Studio alongside group fitness.
With 5,500–6,000 members and a gym floor of around 500 square metres, making the most of every bit of space matters. The team also talked us through the new dry-side access gates and the decision to close the facility for seven days to complete the fit-out and other works. They shared the benefits of that approach, along with some of the challenges.
The tour is the first of several opportunities for people in the health and fitness network to come together, share ideas and learn from each other. A big thank you to Shai, Shelley and Matt for sharing their experience, and to Professional Development sponsor Pool Robotics Perth, the City of Armadale and the AFAC team for making the visit possible.
