The Leisure Institute of Western Australia (Aquatics) is proud to announce Helen Harris from Aqualife Swim School, Town of Victoria Park as the winner of the prestigious Swim Teacher of the Year award at the 2025 WA Aquatic Recreation Industry Awards.

This award, sponsored by Royal Life Saving WA, recognises the commitment, contribution, and professionalism of individual teachers who go above and beyond to deliver safe, high-quality aquatic education. Helen embodies these values in every aspect of her work, inspiring both her students and colleagues through her warmth, expertise, and passion for teaching.

With an impressive portfolio of qualifications – including Austswim Assessor, Teacher of Aquatics Access & Inclusion, Autism Swim Accreditation, and specialised training in infant aquatics – Helen has dedicated her career to creating safe, inclusive, and engaging swim experiences for children of all abilities. She is renowned for her ability to transform swim lessons into joyful, imaginative spaces where children feel confident to explore, learn, and thrive.

Her innovative teaching style incorporates storytelling, sensory play, and age-appropriate activities that make essential water safety skills accessible and memorable. From supporting neurodiverse swimmers with visual aids and sensory breaks to coaching competitive juniors at school swimming trials, Helen’s approach is holistic, inclusive, and deeply human.

Beyond the pool, Helen’s leadership has had a profound ripple effect across the aquatic education community. She mentors new instructors, presents at industry events such as the ASSA Swimposium, and coordinates the Telethon Superfins Learn to Swim program – a not-for-profit initiative delivering specialised lessons for children and young adults with disabilities.

Families regularly praise her ability to connect with children:

“Helen is amazing. She is warm, patient, and just THE BEST.”
“She’s so great with the kids and knows just how to keep them interested.”
“Helen creates a relaxed and fun environment for babies to learn to swim.”

LIWA Aquatics EO Leith Fradd congratulated Helen, saying:

“Helen Harris represents the very best of our industry. Her passion for teaching, commitment to inclusion, and dedication to safety make her an outstanding role model for all aquatic educators. We are thrilled to see her recognised with this award.”

Helen’s win is not only a personal achievement but also a celebration of the impact that dedicated, skilled teachers can have on the safety, confidence, and wellbeing of their communities.

Congratulations, Helen – your work continues to make Western Australia’s aquatic industry stronger, safer, and more inclusive.
