Keeping Pools Running and Communities Swimming – Maddie McGrinder Takes Top Honours

Published Tue 16 Sep 2025

The Leisure Institute of Western Australia (Aquatics) is proud to announce Maddilyn (Maddie) McGrinder from the Eneabba Aquatic Centre, Shire of Carnamah, as the 2025 Aquatic Technical Operator of the Year.

This award recognises individuals who excel in facility operations, demonstrating leadership, technical expertise, and a commitment to safety and customer service in roles such as Duty Manager, Supervisor, or Aquatic Technical Operator. Maddie’s story is one of rapid growth, initiative, and an unwavering passion for both the technical and community sides of aquatics.

Technical Excellence Under Pressure

Since becoming qualified in April 2023, Maddie has embraced the full scope of aquatic facility operations, proving herself capable of managing the complexities of plant room systems and chemical dosing. Just weeks into her new role, she faced a critical plant room incident that could have closed the facility for the day. Identifying dangerously high filter pressure and overdosed chemicals, Maddie worked methodically under pressure—researching, troubleshooting, and stabilising the system before opening. Her calm approach not only resolved the issue but safeguarded the health and safety of patrons.

Later, while operating as the sole technical operator at Eneabba, Maddie again demonstrated her initiative. When chlorine dosing equipment failed, she manually maintained the pool’s chemical balance before creatively repairing the system herself with limited local resources. As she put it, “I’ve saved the season.” These examples highlight not only her problem-solving skills but also her deep commitment to keeping her community pool safe and operational.

Leadership and Mentorship

Maddie’s impact extends beyond her own responsibilities. In 2023, she stepped into an acting team leader role at LeisureFit Booragoon, where she created a structured training register, mentored newly qualified Aquatic Technical Operators, and provided hands-on guidance in plant room operations. She affectionately refers to her trainees as her “ducklings,” reflecting her supportive and approachable leadership style.

Even outside of rostered hours, Maddie has remained a trusted resource for colleagues, taking calls and video chats to help others troubleshoot issues. She has also extended her support to the wider regional aquatics community, proactively mentoring and offering guidance to new operators facing the unique challenges of working in isolated towns.

Innovation in Industry Engagement

In addition to her technical and leadership strengths, Maddie has become a vibrant advocate for regional aquatic operations on social media. Through her TikTok channel (@maddz_moves), she has attracted more than 3.6 million views, sharing behind-the-scenes insights into the life of a pool manager. Her bright personality, sunscreen-taped microphone, and humorous storytelling have brought widespread attention to the important work of regional operators—reaching audiences across WA, nationally, and internationally.

This innovative approach not only raises awareness of the challenges and opportunities in aquatics but has also positioned Maddie as a relatable industry voice, with many peers reaching out for her advice and support.

Commitment to Safety and Work Ethic

Maddie’s nomination reflects a strong commitment to safe work practices, embedding safety culture into every aspect of her training and leadership. Whether managing chemical dosing procedures, mentoring staff on PPE use, or calmly responding to emergencies, she ensures safety is never compromised.

Her work ethic is equally impressive. Known for her reliability and adaptability, Maddie consistently goes above and beyond rostered hours to support programs, swimming lessons, and community events. Her dedication to her team and the public exemplifies the highest standards of service in the industry.

A Rising Star of the Industry

From being recognised as an Olympic Change-Maker in 2020 to becoming a trusted technical operator, mentor, and industry advocate, Maddie’s journey reflects the very qualities this award was created to honour. She embodies technical skill, leadership, innovation, and community spirit—demonstrating the vital role aquatic technical operators play in the success and safety of facilities across Western Australia.

On behalf of LIWA Aquatics, we congratulate Maddilyn McGrinder on being named the 2025 Aquatic Technical Operator of the Year. Her dedication, ingenuity, and passion inspire us all and showcase the strength of our industry’s future.
