Claremont Aquatic Centre Wins 2025 Sustainability Award

Published Mon 06 Oct 2025

LIWA Aquatics is proud to announce Claremont Aquatic Centre, Town of Claremont, as the winner of the 2025 WA Aquatic Recreation Industry (ARI) Sustainability Award.

This award recognises excellence in sustainability practices across the built environment, highlighting organisations that demonstrate strong leadership in energy efficiency, water conservation, waste reduction, and chemical sustainability.

Leading in Chemical Sustainability

The Claremont Aquatic Centre stood out for its comprehensive approach to sustainability, with a particular focus on chemical sustainability. By transitioning from chlorine gas to a safer, saltwater chlorination system, the Centre has improved both environmental outcomes and on-site safety, while maintaining the highest water quality standards.

A Multi-Faceted Approach to Sustainability

Claremont Aquatic Centre’s commitment goes far beyond chemicals. The facility has implemented a suite of sustainable infrastructure initiatives that collectively reduce environmental impact while also lowering operational costs:

  • Solar panels providing clean, renewable energy.
  • Bore water system supporting non-potable use and reducing demand on municipal supplies.
  • Geothermal heating delivering efficient and low-impact climate control.
  • Recycling initiatives diverting waste from landfill and encouraging resource recovery.
  • Environmentally responsible chemical practices prioritising eco-conscious alternatives.

These actions reflect the Centre’s belief that sustainability is both good business and the right thing for the planet.

Goals and Benefits

At the core of the Centre’s sustainability strategy is the goal of creating a safe, environmentally friendly facility that minimises its ecological footprint. The benefits are clear:

  • Reduced greenhouse gas emissions through renewable energy generation.
  • Lower reliance on natural gas and electricity via geothermal heating.
  • Decreased water usage with the bore water system.
  • Reduced waste through recycling and chemical sustainability practices.

Through these efforts, Claremont Aquatic Centre continues to set the benchmark for what modern aquatic facilities can achieve in sustainability.

Measuring Success

Sustainability at Claremont Aquatic Centre is not just about implementation—it’s about measurable results.

  • Solar panel performance is monitored in real-time to ensure maximum efficiency.
  • Water use is carefully tracked in collaboration with the Water Corporation.
  • Geothermal systems significantly reduce reliance on traditional energy sources.
  • Waste reduction is evident through fewer general waste bins and expanded recycling capacity.

The Centre’s ongoing monitoring and continuous improvement ensure that sustainability remains a cornerstone of operations well into the future.
