At this week’s Regional Seminar John ‘Simmo’ Simmonds was presented with his Life Membership award of LIWA Aquatics — becoming just the twelfth person to receive this prestigious honour in the organisation’s 55-year history.
Established in 1969 as the Swimming Pool Managers Association of WA, LIWA Aquatics recognises Life Membership as its highest accolade, awarded only to those who have provided outstanding service to their communities, the Institute, and the broader aquatic industry. John’s contribution over more than three decades epitomises that spirit of service and leadership.
A Lifelong Commitment to Community
Best known for his many years managing the Merredin Swimming Pool, John has been a cornerstone of aquatic life in the Wheatbelt. Thousands of families have enjoyed the safety and comfort of the pool under his care, and generations of local children learned to swim there through programs like VacSwim. From community fun days to the town’s once-famous water slide, John ensured that the pool remained a welcoming hub for everyone.
John was also an early advocate for child supervision standards and safety. Before the introduction of Watch Around Water, he championed stronger supervision practices at a local level and promoted consistency across regional facilities.
A Voice for the Regions
Throughout his career, John played a vital role in strengthening the network of nearly 30 Wheatbelt pools. He frequently hosted regional seminars, provided hands-on support to fellow managers, and mentored new professionals entering the field. His efforts ensured that the challenges of regional operators remained front of mind for LIWA Aquatics, helping the organisation stay relevant and responsive to the needs of members across Western Australia.
A Lasting Legacy
Holding qualifications in Technical Operations, Pool Lifeguarding, and First Aid, John has not only managed facilities but also trained and mentored countless individuals who went on to shape the next generation of the aquatic workforce. In later years, his reputation for reliability and expertise saw him travel widely across the region, stepping in to assist at a variety of pools facing staffing shortages.
Known for his practical approach, steady leadership, and unwavering dependability, John embodies the values of the aquatic profession — community, safety, and service.
On behalf of the Board and members, LIWA Aquatics congratulates John Simmonds on this well-deserved recognition and thanks him for his extraordinary contribution to the industry and the people of regional Western Australia.
