Kununurra Redevelopment: Kimberley’s First 50m Pool

Published Thu 29 Jan 2026

The Kununurra Leisure Centre redevelopment well underway and the Shire targeting an opening in June 2026 for the new aquatic facilities.

Set in the heart of Kununurra, the Leisure Centre is a vibrant, multi-use community hub, and this redevelopment will help transform the precinct into one of the region’s premier community assets. The upgrade includes a state-of-the-art 50-metre pool (the first in the Kimberley) alongside a dedicated leisure pool designed to enhance and complement the much-loved Splash Park. Key features include an eight-lane 50m pool with 2.5-metre-wide lanes and depths from 1.1m to 1.8m, a leisure pool with a turbo channel, walking lanes, water features and a learn-to-swim area, plus supporting infrastructure such as a plant room and balance tank, a Changing Places changeroom, and a dedicated chemical storage area. The aquatic redevelopment also builds on earlier precinct improvements, including the Splash Park water playground that opened in 2022.

This project reflects strong partnership investment, with $10.6 million in State support and a $3.9 million contribution from the Shire, alongside earlier planning and design funding. Importantly, the decision to deliver a 50-metre pool was shaped by clear community demand—highlighting the value of community-led planning in regional infrastructure.

As with any major redevelopment, the community has navigated disruption throughout the works, including a significant period without a pool, but the outcome will be a modern, inclusive venue that supports participation, safety, and stronger pathways into sport, recreation and wellbeing. Beyond aquatics, planning continues for a full renewal of the Centre’s indoor recreation facilities, with design progressing to support a broader, precinct-wide uplift.

A project like this doesn’t run on concrete alone—it runs on people (and the occasional heroic roster shuffle). In preparation for opening, the Shire is recruiting several new positions to form a refreshed team that will lead the delivery of high-quality programs and services to the community.

A key opportunity is the Recreation Facilities Manager, with the Shire seeking an experienced, energetic and forward-thinking leader to recruit and lead a new team, oversee the opening of this flagship facility, and deliver recreation and aquatic services that make a genuine difference to a remote and diverse community.

LIWA Aquatics also acknowledges the strong workforce development focus already in motion, with the Shire recently employing eight East Kimberley students through the Royal Life Saving WA Talent Pool Program as Splash Park Attendants—supporting on-the-job training and creating visible local pathways into the aquatic industry. We look forward to sharing further updates as Kununurra moves toward opening in June 2026 and encourage industry professionals to explore the Shire’s advertised vacancies for those interested in being part of this exciting next chapter.
