Wendy Cole Honoured with 2025 Smith Robertson Award

Published Mon 11 Aug 2025

The Leisure Institute of Western Australia (Aquatics) is proud to announce Wendy Cole as the recipient of the 2025 Smith Robertson Award, one of LIWA Aquatics’ highest honours.

Named in recognition of two foundational figures in our sector, Fred Smith and John Robertson, the award celebrates individuals who have made an outstanding and enduring contribution to the aquatic industry in Western Australia. It recognises long-standing service, leadership, and a legacy of excellence — honouring those who have helped shape the standards, culture, and future direction of our industry.

Wendy’s career is a testament to these values. A member of LIWA Aquatics for more than 34 years, she is one of the few to have achieved the 30-year service award, which she attained in 2021. While she began her journey at the Morawa Swimming Pool, Wendy became a familiar and respected figure at the City of Mandurah’s Aquatic Centre from 2002 onwards. Over the years, she has been a constant presence through major facility renovations, program expansions, and growing community patronage — always as a leader, mentor, and trusted colleague. Her contributions were also recognised locally with a Certificate of Appreciation from the City of Mandurah as part of its Australia Day Awards.

Beyond her facility-based role, Wendy has left an indelible mark on LIWA Aquatics itself. She served for many years on the Board, played a key role in organising our industry conference, coordinated delegate registrations, facilitated rooms, and supported regional seminars across WA, helping build and sustain the industry’s strong professional network. In 2016, she received the LIWA Presidents Award for her outstanding contributions.

Wendy’s dedication to professional training has also shaped the next generation of aquatic professionals. Since gaining her Cert IV in Training and Assessment in 2013, she has delivered countless Aquatic Technical Operator, Pool Lifeguard, and First Aid programs, and has been instrumental in developing course content and learner materials. Her training excellence has been recognised by Royal Life Saving WA, where she has received both an Outstanding Service Order and Service Medal.

Her industry involvement extends far beyond the classroom:

  • Entering teams in every Pool Lifeguard Challenge since its inception
  • Serving as a judge for both the ARI Awards and Pool Lifeguard Challenges
  • Championing the Watch Around Water and Waterwise programs
  • Receiving a Bravery Rescue Award from Royal Life Saving
  • Mentoring countless newcomers to the industry
  • Providing relief work in communities including Kununurra, Wyndham, Esperance, and Moora

Enthusiastic, generous with her time, and always ready to lend her skills wherever needed, Wendy has been a driving force for progress and professionalism in WA’s aquatic recreation industry.

On behalf of our Board and membership, we congratulate Wendy Cole on this well-deserved recognition and thank her for her decades of service, leadership, and unwavering commitment to our community.
