New Swim Teacher Program

Published Tue 22 Dec 2020

Dear WA Aquatics Industry

It is with great excitement that Royal Life Saving WA is launching a new program to support the delivery of swimming and water safety programs to children across our communities.

SWIM TEACHER by Royal Life Saving is an innovative and flexible training solution that provides successful candidates with a vocationally aligned, industry recognised Swim Teacher Qualification (Skill Set) from the SIS Sport, Fitness and Recreation Training Package.

2020 is a year which many of us wish to forget. Unfortunately, the impact of COVID-19 on the aquatic sector is long lasting and contributes to many future challenges.

Recent data released by Royal Life Saving and the Aquatic Recreation Industry shows that over the COVID-19 shutdown period many children missed out on their swimming lessons. After the COVID-19 shutdown enrolments in learn to swim significantly increased and many aquatic facilities have reported that they do not have an adequate number of swimming teachers.

Many new swimming teachers are now needed in WA to ensure that no child misses out on taking part in swimming lessons and all learn to swim programs can be delivered by a qualified SWIM TEACHER.

Solution

In partnership with the McGowan Government, Royal Life Saving has developed a new SWIM TEACHER program which complies with vocational and industry standards. The SWIM TEACHER program provides a streamlined path from training to teaching for participants into entry level swimming instructor roles.

The SWIM TEACHER training course will be free for eligible students including those who are unemployed, and people aged 15—24* (course fees will apply to non-concession eligible students).

SWIM TEACHER by Royal Life Saving is aligned to SISSS00112 – Swimming and Water Safety Skill Set and includes the following Units of Competency:

SISCAQU008 - Instruct water familiarisation, buoyancy and mobility skills

SISCAQU010 - Instruct swimming strokes

SISCAQU009 - Instruct water safety and survival skills

SISCAQU002 - Perform basic water rescues

The new SWIM TEACHER by Royal Life Saving program will be available in early 2021. More information will be provided in coming weeks. www.royalifesavingwa.com.au
