Robinson Smith Award

Purpose

The Robinson Smith Award honours an individual who has made an exceptional and sustained contribution to the aquatic and recreation industry in Western Australia, demonstrating leadership, professionalism, innovation, and commitment to community wellbeing and water safety.

1. Call for Nominations

  • Opening: Open now
  • Closing: 15th July 2025
  • Who Can Nominate: LIWA Board Members can nominate one nominee each.  
  • Submission Format: Submission addressing all five judging criteria with clear examples and supporting evidence.

2. Eligibility Criteria

Nominees must:

  • Have worked within WA’s aquatic and recreation sector.
  • Demonstrate sustained involvement (preferably 10+ years).
  • Not be a current sitting LIWA Board member.
  • Have made a significant impact to the industry.

3. Judging Panel

  • Comprised of all LIWA Board members
  • Judging is confidential and impartial.

4. Judging Criteria (Total 100 Points)

Nominees are assessed across five criteria, each scored out of 20 points:

  1. Outstanding Contribution (20 pts)
    Evidence of a significant, lasting impact on the aquatics and recreation industry.
  2. Leadership and Influence (20 pts)
    Demonstrated leadership that inspires others, fosters collaboration, and promotes professional development and innovation.
  3. Commitment to Water Safety & Public Education (20 pts)
    Ongoing dedication to water safety, drowning prevention, and public education with measurable community impact.
  4. Professional Excellence (20 pts)
    Exemplifies integrity, professionalism, and best practice.
  5. Sustained Service (20 pts)
    A track record of long-term service and contribution that has advanced the reputation and capability of the aquatic and recreation sector.

5. Selection Process

  • Each judge independently scores nominations.
  • In the event of a close result, judges may deliberate to reach consensus.
  • The highest scoring nominee is recommended for the award, subject to Board endorsement.

6. Award Announcement

  • The recipient is contacted confidentially ahead of the Aquatic & Recreation Industry Awards evening, held during the annual LIWA Conference.
  • The award is formally presented during the ceremony, recognising the recipient’s contributions in front of industry peers.

7. Record Keeping

  • All nominations and scoring are documented and securely archived by the Executive Officer.
  • Selection outcomes are summarised (excluding scores) in Board minutes for transparency.
